Atlanta’s reputation for spacious living is backed by solid numbers. The city boasts a median lot size of 11,560 square feet, providing residents with ample room to breathe. Not to be outdone, the median home size in Atlanta is a comfortable 1,950 square feet. These figures reaffirm Atlanta’s commitment to offering residents the luxury of space within their homes and on their properties.
The Method Behind the Ranking
The StorageCafe report examined the 50 largest cities in the United States by population and considered several key metrics to establish their rankings. The criteria included median home size (weighted at 40%), median lot size (also weighted at 40%), crime rate per 1,000 residents, median income, commuting time, house price, self-storage street rates, and self-storage inventory per capita.
Southern Cities Shine Bright
Notably, southern U.S. cities seem to excel in providing spacious living, with seven southern cities securing spots in the top 10 of the StorageCafe report. Raleigh, North Carolina, claimed the coveted No. 1 spot, while Charlotte, North Carolina, secured the third position. These cities’ dedication to spacious living is evident in their rankings.
Challenges in Other Regions
In contrast, cities in the Midwest and along the East Coast often lag when it comes to space. Philadelphia, in particular, was identified as the worst city for space in the report. The average home in Philadelphia spans 1,280 square feet and sits on a lot of just 1,420 square feet. These figures underscore the challenges faced by residents in these regions who seek roomier living spaces.
A Decade of Change
The report also highlights a notable trend over the last decade. Residential lot and house sizes have been on a downward trajectory. The median size of a new single-family home now stands at approximately 2,299 square feet, a 4% decrease from a decade ago.
Similarly, median lot sizes have shrunk by 8% to 8,891 square feet. These changes reflect evolving preferences and urban development patterns.
